Wigan switchover underway soon

The digital TV switchover gets underway across Wigan later this year and Makerfield MP Ian McCartney is raising awareness that at the start of November and through December, all analogue services will cease.

During November (Stage 1) the analogue BBC 2 signal will be switched off and freeview will extend to reach all areas of the Granada region for the first time.

This means that:

  • If viewers haven’t switched to digital, viewers will lose BBC 2
  • If viewers have freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision viewers will need to install or retune their equipment
  • Viewers with Sky TV or Virgin Media will not be affected

In December (Stage 2) the rest of the analogue channels will be switched off.

This will mean:

  •  If viewers haven’t switched to digital, viewers will lose all TV channels
  • If viewers have Freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision they will need to re-tune their equipment again.
  • Sky TV, Virgin media will not be affected by switchover

The Switchover Help Scheme can help the over 75s make the switch to digital TV. Help to convert TV to digital is free and available to the over 75s and those who get or could get Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance or mobility supplement; or have lived in a care home for six months or more, or are registered blind or partially sighted.

Ian McCartney MP said, “Wigan’s switchover is coming soon and many people will be receiving Freeview channels for the first time."

“I am encouraging viewers who still don’t have the necessary equipment to get ready in time for December, when all the analogue channels will be permanently switched off. Anyone who needs advice during this period should contact Digital UK.”

Digital UK, the body leading switchover, continues to provide support through local its website www.digitaluk.co.uk

The Switchover Help Scheme is still welcoming applications from eligible older and disabled people to get help to convert one television – including a choice of equipment, installation and aftercare. Eligible people who have already converted a TV set without assistance can still apply to convert a second set.

Ian added,  “I am keen to make sure that older and disabled people are prepared for the digital switchover, which is now close at hand."

“This is an excellent scheme which makes the whole process as straightforward as possible so if you need help give the Switchover Help Team a call on 0800 40 85 900.”
