Vision becomes reality as Wigan Borough Veterans Council opens its doors and welcomes Veterans Minister

Veterans Minister Kevan Jones MP officially opened the Platt Bridge premises of the new Wigan Borough Veterans Council on Saturday, 17th October 2009.

For Ian McCartney the day marked the end of a 5 year campaign to establish the Council which is believed to be a first for the country.

The popular veterans badge campaign which has so far seen over 1,000 local veterans receive their badge via the borough’s MPs was the catalyst which led to the campaign.

Ian McCartney MP said, “It became clear to me that simply turning up once a year to a poppy parade was simply not sufficient and that there was a need to have across the borough a network where local veteran organisations could work with local and national government to ‘speak up and speak out’ in representing their interests in developing the services that veterans and their families need.”
