 Ian McCartney MP joined Mencap and the 11 times Paralympic gold medallist Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson to celebrate Learning Disability Week and call for an increase in the number of Changing Places toilets available in the UK. Standard disabled toilets do not meet the needs of all people with a disability. There are over 230,000 people who need to use a Changing Places toilet in the UK and yet only 85 Changing Places toilets are available.  Makerfield MP Ian McCartney has backed a British Heart Foundation (BHF) campaign to ban cigarette vending machines after meeting the stars of a new film which showed how easy it was for children to buy cigarettes. FAIRTRADE COSMETICS FOR WIGAN
Ian McCartney MP is encouraging shoppers in Wigan to buy fair trade cosmetics and toiletries that are now available in the shops.
People will now be able to buy 57 products with Fairtrade certified ingredients, including lip balms, face masks, body butters and shower gels. Shops like Boots will stock the products. Across the UK, 31% of people say they are interested in buying cosmetics carrying the Fairtrade Mark.
Ian has welcomed the Government’s support to the Fairtrade movement and urged Wigan constituents to buy Fair Trade products when they can.

Parliamentary Move To Crackdown On Construction Gangmasters
Ian McCartney MP has sponsored the tabling of a new Bill which if passed would crackdown on illegal gangmasters operating in the construction industry. The 10 minute Rule Bill received its first reading last week, and seeks to extend the Gangmasters Licensing Act to cover the construction industry. Real help to protect local people from floods
The Government has today published new plans to help protect local communities like Wigan from flooding. Since the devastating floods of 2007 flood defences now protect an extra 43,000 homes and this in turn as modernised our flood protection system. The Government is already increasing investment in flood risk management to £800 million a year on 2010/11.
