‘Freedom to live the way you want’ says McCartney as flagship retirement village opens in Platt Bridge
Ian McCartney today spoke of his pride as he officially opened a flagship retirement village in Platt Bridge.
Belong Wigan located on Millers Lane heralds a wonderful new quality of life for older people who want the comfort and convenience of ‘living at home’ along with any extra support that may be needed. Belong provides modern apartments close to a bistro, hairdresser, village shop and village hall.
Ian proposed the development over 5 years ago to develop an integrated approach to care for older people and working with Wigan Council and CLS Care Services Chief Executive Nick Dykes the vision is now a reality.
Ian McCartney MP said, “This is a landmark moment in the provision of care for older people and a new start for the residents of Sherwood House. We have moved a long way from the ‘old peoples homes’ which have provided care for generations."
“Belong offers self contained apartments and small group living households where residents with a range of abilities and care and nursing needs, benefit from a level of support that is just right for them. All this is backed by state of the art services, dedicated staff and the door is open to the local people making Belong a real part of the wider community.”
The day was tinged with sadness as staff remembered their former work colleague Margaret Seddon who died suddenly whilst on holiday. Ian paid tribute to her contribution to the development of care services.
