D-Day veteran honored by Royal British Legion
In the week that the country mourned the loss of two former WWI veterans – Henry Allingham and Harry Patch, a special presentation ceremony was held (Sunday, 26th July) to honour Mr Stanley Sudworth, a veteran of Dunkirk and the D-Day Landings of WWII.
Stanley Sudworth (born 2nd Sept 1920 in Ashton) a ‘well known and popular man’ in Ashton in Makerfield was awarded the Royal British Legion (RBL) Gold Badge for Meritorious Service following a nomination by the Ashton in Makerfield Branch of the RBL.
Mr Sudworth served in the Royal Navy for six years and attained the rank of Petty Officer. His contribution during WWII was recognised in 1994 by the French Government for his service to their country.
Ian McCartney MP presented the Gold Badge to Stanley. Ian said, “Stanley has made a significant contribution to life in Ashton in Makerfield. He is more than just a name, he is a man who is admired and revered – this award is more than just a piece of metal beautiful as it is - it is a signal, a representation of everything Stanley has done on behalf of the Royal British Legion and more than 60 years of contribution to society without the expectation of anything in return."
“Today’s presentation is not the end – it is the beginning of another chapter in Stanley’s life and on behalf of the local community I salute him.”
Mel Lee – Chair of Ashton in Makerfield Branch of the RBL said, “Stanley joined the Ashton in Makerfield Branch in 1961 and he continues to actively participate in the annual Poppy Appeal every year. At 89 years of age he still insists on delivering poppies to outlets on his ‘patch’ around Ashton. He attends every parade and always requests that full regalia be worn."
“He is a well known and popular man and is respected by fellow branch members – this award is long overdue and fully deserved.”
